Orchard or Food Forest
The perfect part to a sustainable food system.
Fruit trees produce better when they are planted in pairs. An apple tree needs another apple tree, not the same type of apple, to pollinate. Therefore, your orchard should start with a minimum of two trees.
Blueberries and currants grow to the south, below the fruit trees. To start, we recommend at least two blueberry bushes and two currant bushes.
Package 1: 6 fruit trees and 12 berry bushes, planted – $1 900
Package 2: 2 fruit trees and 4 berry bushes, planted – $720
Expanding the number of growing beds
Now that your school has had the chance to experience successfully growing food, it may be time to add another bed or more.
- 4ft x 8ft x 24in. cedar bed filled with soil and planted with seeds and seedlings – $1 625 each
Students growing their own seedlings for the garden or to take home
Learning how to make wicking or self-watering pots, students will plant tomato, basil, and pepper plants at the beginning of April. Then, when it is time to plant the school edible garden, some of these plants will be planted in the garden and the rest students may take home. South facing windows will be the best for growing seedlings.
We offer a single class experience:
- Workshop, including the supplies (pots, soil, seeds, instructions) – $450
Or a full half day with up to 3 classes rotating through:
- Workshop, including the supplies (pots, soil, seeds, instructions) – $1 100
Planting your existing garden
Replanting an existing garden – $475 (additional beds $125 each)
We are so excited to be able to return to schools to help students replant the garden beds. For a two-bed garden we are offering up to two classes to come consecutively. Each session is 45-60 minutes long.
Each class will:
- Review garden mapping
- Add compost
- Place seeds and seedlings and plant one of the beds
- Label plants
- Re-install the row cover tubing
- Discuss the summer garden team
